Dr. Anil Sooklal
Deputy Director-General, Department of International Relations and Cooperation, South Africa, and Chair, Committee of Senior Officials of IORA
Professor Sooklal is the current Deputy Director-General of Asia and Middle East, at the Department of International Relations and Cooperation. He was first appointed in 2003.
He achieved his Doctorate in Oriental History from the University of Durban-Westville (now UKZN). Prof. Sooklal was appointed as the Ambassador to the European Union from 2006-2012. Prior to this, he served as Political Counsellor at the South African Permanent Mission to the United Nations in Geneva (1995-1997), and then at the High Commission in New Delhi (1998-1999). He is the current South African Sherpa for BRICS, the G20 and IBSA. He is also the current Chair of the IORA CSO.
He has received a number of academic fellowships, the most recent being an Adjunct Professorship with the Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University in China during 2016 and a fellowship at the RIS in New Delhi in 2018.
