Hon. Tilak Marapana, P.C., M.P
Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka
Having been appointed as a Member of Parliament from the national list of the UNP in 2015, Hon. Tilak Marapana previously served as Minister of Law and Order and Prison Reforms from September to November 2015. He assumed duties as Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka on 18th August 2017.
A lawyer by profession and President’s Counsel, he served as a government prosecutor in the Attorney General’s Department for twenty six years before joining politics. Hon. Marapana joined the Attorney General’s Department as a Crown Counsel in 1968. He served as a State Counsel, Senior State Counsel and Deputy Solicitor General. In 1988 he was made a member of the President’s Counsel and in 1990 he was appointed as the Solicitor General. Thereafter, he was appointed as the Attorney General in 1992.
He has a degree in Chemistry and Maths, as well as a Law degree.
After being appointed as a Member of Parliament in 2000, he held the portfolios of Defence from 2001-2003, in addition to the post of Minister of Transport, Highways and Aviation from 2002-2004. He is the only non Presidential or Prime Ministerial holder of the portfolio of Defence.
